The Righteous Elder Symeon

The Eastern Church today commemorates the Righteous elder Symeon, who took up the Christ child in his arms at the temple.

One legend holds that he was over 300 years old, and was one of the translators of the Septuagint, who penned the line, "a virgin shall conceive and bear a son...(Isaiah 7.14)"

The words of the Nunc Dimittis, recited at Evening Prayer, are attributed in Luke's Gospel to Symeon:

"Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel (Luke 2.29-32, RSV)."
